A question solved of the novel "The outsider" by Albert Camus

Why the protagonist used 4 bullets?

First, the first bullet was enough to kill the Arab.So is it much important to concentrate on the fact that the protagonist used four bullets instead of one.Afterall he has not killed four men with his four bullets.

second, the protagonist killed the Arab for self defense. This killing for self defense is itself justified. So what is wrong in him if he ensures his self defense by using four bullet?

third,From the description of the moment of killing and from the later honest confession in the court the protagonist shows that his mental condition was not well due to the excessive heat And his this honest confession is itself enough to justify his four bullets. How can we expect too rational decision of using just one bullet for self defense when his both physical and mental condition is not well.

fourth, his very act of using four bullets proves that he is not a professional criminal. If he were professional he would not use those extra bullets.

fifth, the protagonist lacks the quality of showiness. To him there is no difference between killing a man using one bullet or four. But the pretentious society is too much concerned about this detail cause this society is constituted of the morals having no connection with the deeper reality of human being.
