My analysis of Ts Eliot's"The Tradition and Individual Talent"
Largely
speaking the whole essay is a rebellion against tradition,a rebellion
against traditional concept of tradition as well as individuality.Traditionally we think tradition is only the past and whatever is
individual must be different from it.But Eliot challenges this view. The
traditional view has made tradition a dead thing and individuality an
impossibility. But Eliot tells that to be an absolutely new thing is not
at all individuality cause no artist no poet has the artistic entity
without the presence of the past writers.Past is not dead but it's
living by the current of art and to be conscious about present you have
to realize the presentness of the past. The present poet's most
individual lines are those in which the presence of their ancestors are
most noticeable. Thus Eliot relates the past with the present and makes
tradition not a matter of only past but of present. He also shows individuality not distant from the tradition rather shows that they are
deeply connected. All his endeavor was to show that art especially
poetry is a living entity and the poet is a medium or a catalyst.Certainly the emotions and feelings of a poet may be reflected
in certain parts of a poem but the intensity of the poem is sth
different from the poet's personal feelings. It has its own intensity and
own emotion. Not the poet but the poetry that contains the flow of art
from past to present. He says that for a true poet poetry is a way of
depersonalization, a surrendering of ego.It is an escapism of a man who
has real feelings and emotions.
