I
think Paradise lost is a representation of protestant doctrine of
life. This view says that everything is predestined or runs according to
the will of God.Milton in his epic tries to uphold this doctrine and
accordingly he says"I may assert eternal providence,/And justify the
ways of God to man."Here satan is the representative of free will and he
things it is unconquerable. But from the statement of milton which I
have mentioned,it is clear that he in no way supports the free will and
will justify God's will. Some lines of Satan or miltons comments may
appear as examples of milton's sympathy to satan but if we see closely
we will find the fruitlessness of these debates because satan was
actually trying to depict the real nature of a creature who thinks that
he has a free will.obviously as he was trying to present a true
nature, there comes few heroic characteristics of satan as well as some
bad characteristics. But it does not mean that he was in Satan's side rather
it proves he can depict a character more realistically.
